Position open: Policy Associate

The Billion Readers (BIRD) initiative is looking for an experienced professional to join our team and support our policy efforts. Candidates with an intersectional background in the domain of Development Studies, Law, Public Policy or Media and Communications are strongly urged to apply.

We are an educational non-profit entity, and our system change goal is to boost reading literacy nationwide across India through the low-cost and easily scalable tool of Same Language Subtitles (SLS). Our efforts to scale SLS include collaborating with government ministries, non-profit and commercial industry players across the educational, entertainment and disability rights sectors. Key responsibilities would include:

1. Carrying out research and assisting in preparing opinion pieces, recommendations and proposals relevant to ours and our partner organisations’ objectives.

2. Liaising effectively and collaboratively with government ministries like the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, etc. and their various departmental bodies to further our system change goal.

3. Establishing and maintaining strong connects and discourse with (1) stakeholders from the entertainment industry (producers, media executives, film and TV guilds, etc) across film, broadcasting and streaming platform media as well as (2) our strategic partners, other non-profits and civil society groups in the disability rights, education and entertainment sectors.

4. Staying up-to-date and maintaining a repository on regulatory and policy shifts in the media access, broadcasting, education and technology domains. We foresee this role to evolve over time depending on BIRD and its partners’ requirements and the varying regulatory and policy landscape. A good deal of flexibility and adaptability will be required.

 Official Notification: 

Travel: This role will be full-time and based in New Delhi, but will require regular travel, often with short notice, for meetings and presentations in places across India.

Qualifications and Desired Skill Set:

● A Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies, Public Policy, Law, and/or Communications. Post-Graduate qualifications are a plus, but not a prerequisite

● 1-2 years of work experience in the social impact sector 

● Fluency in Hindi and English

● Outstanding oral and written communication, effective interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to convey complex arguments in writing is a must.

● Proven track record of working successfully with a wide array of stakeholders

● Strong ability to work independently

● Candidate must possess and maintain highest levels of ethical conduct and integrity
